Making Art

Diane works with rapidograph pen and watercolor. After making a preliminary sketch based on reference material such as photographs or field guides, she measures out the placement and dimensions of her design. The entire piece is lightly sketched in pencil. Then the permanent ink is applied with a fine point rapidograph pen. The main components are drawn twice in order to create subtle movement of line. The pencil is erased and Diane paints the watercolor in with small brushes. The finishing touches are enhanced with gouache, watercolor pencil or with hints of glitter. It is a very unforgiving medium as both the pen and paints are permanent. Deep breath!
